Triomf Clinic makes history with
innovative treatment.
Dr Odette Koch, one of Triomf Clinic’s faithful volunteer specialists, made Triomf History on Tuesday, 20 April 2021 by performing this surgical technique for the first time at Triomf. The so-called WALANT procedure (Wide Awake Local Anesthesia no Tourniquet) means that certain operations can take place in a consulting room environment, such as at Triomf Clinic, rather than in a hospital under general anesthesia.
The WALANT procedure is ideal for treating conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, for example. This syndrome means that the middle nerve is pinched in someone’s hand. (Other hand surgeries can also be performed in this way.)
Being able to perform this procedure at the Triomf Clinic’s excellent facilities has several benefits for needy patients and volunteer medical service providers, such as a convenient treatment environment and significantly lower costs for treatment. For Triomf Clinic, this means that more people are being helped for free.
Five patients have already been treated free of charge using the WALANT method at Triomf Clinic, in collaboration with Dr Helene Basson of Operation Healing Hands.
Triomf Clinic’s goal is to offer excellent care with dignity free of charge to the needy community of Pretoria West. The extraordinary WALANT technique is therefore ideal to use at Triomf.
